President’s Message
A Note From WB President Katie Noga

As another year comes to an end, it’s a great time to reflect on WB activities. We began the year with another successful meeting. Not only did our members take valuable information away from the meeting, but they also provided us with many new suggestions for future program topics.

The WB continues to strive to provide members with developmental presentations that can be applied to daily activities. Along with outstanding keynote speakers, WB programs feature roundtable discussions, targeting many key issues that our companies face today.

The next WB meeting will be held in Las Vegas, Nev., Jan.20-21, 2010. Thanks to the generosity of the Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS), the WB was able to obtain great room rates at The Rio Hotel & Casino where the MACS Convention will be held. Here are just a few topics to be presented during the upcoming meeting:

  • Leadership skills and negotiating tactics
  • Roundtable discussion on hybrid technology
  • Aftermarket trends
  • Updates on "Be Car Care Aware Programs" for U.S. and Canada

You won’t want to miss this dynamic program so be sure to make your reservations and send in your registration form today.

During AAPEX 2009 in Las Vegas, Nev. the WB was pleased to host its12th annual reception. The record-breaking crowd was on-hand as Lisa Kranc, senior vice president of marketing, AutoZone, Inc., was named 2009 Aftermarket Woman of the Year.

The 2009 WB Scholarship Winner, Jessica Randby of Duluth, Minn. was also on-hand to receive her $2,500 check. This year a $1,000 high school scholarship was also awarded to each of the following: Jennifer Fleming of Longmont, Colo.; Chanel Abinader of Jamaica, N.Y.; and Alyssa Schweda of Phoenix, Ariz.

Details on all the winners of 2009 Automotive Communications Awards can be found in the article in this newsletter. This year, we received another record-breaking number of entries. “Best-in-Show” awards, sponsored by the Automotive Communication Council (ACC), were presented to NASCAR and KYB for their outstanding programs. Thanks, once again, to the ACC members who served as judges for this year’s program.

Thank you all for your continued support of the Car Care Council Women’s Board. The generosity of our sponsors and members provides the funding to support the many WB activities that focus on informing female audiences about proper vehicle maintenance and safety, while encouraging young people to investigate automotive career choices.

May you have a wonderful holiday season and a happy, healthy 2010.

Katie Noga
President, Car Care Council Women’s Board

Car Care Council Women’s Board Posts 2009 Automotive Communications Award Winners’ Video to Web site

The Car Care Council Women’s Board (WB) has posted the 2009 Automotive Communications Awards (ACA) winners’ video to its Web site at http://women.carcare.org. The ACA video can also be accessed by clicking on the direct link: www.carcare.org/aca_awards. The video was originally shown during the Women’s Board reception, which took place on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the Sands Expo Center during AAPEX.

“Since not everyone can attend the Women’s Board annual reception during AAPEX, posting the ACA video to our Web site allows us to share it with the entire aftermarket industry,” said Katie Noga, president, Women’s Board. “We had so many outstanding entries this year – it was hard for the judges to choose just one winner per category. I’d like to congratulate everyone on their accomplishments over the past year.”

The Automotive Communications Awards are sponsored by the Women’s Board and supported by the Automotive Communication Council. The awards applaud those companies and agencies that provide automotive information to consumers and the trade professionals who interact with them on a daily basis. Whether it is through outstanding advertising, marketing, merchandising or effective public relations, these two organizations recognize the industry’s outstanding efforts through the ACA competition.

Car Care Council Women’s Board (WB) Awards 2009 Scholarship Winner

During its reception at the Sands Expo Center on Tuesday, Nov. 3, the Car Care Council Women’s Board (WB) presented Jessica Randby of Duluth, Minn., with a $2,500 post-secondary scholarship, as part of the WB scholarship program, now in its seventh year.

Randby attends Lake Superior College, where she is in the automotive service technology program. She lists her career goals as achieving certification from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and going on to open her own repair and body shop. In the future, she would like to hold car care seminars for women so that “more women can learn how important it is to maintain their vehicles and gain basic knowledge of how their vehicles operate.”

Randby is an actively involved student and serves as president of her school’s Auto Service Club. Through the club, she volunteers in community events such as Lights on for Safety and World of Wheels. In high school, Randby was an officer in the Skills USA club and participated in state competitions. In her spare time, she enjoys being outdoors, as well as working on other machinery.

“To receive such a renowned scholarship feels amazing. I feel that most men see women in the automotive field as a nuisance but I want to prove that we can really excel in this field. Being a woman in this industry may be tough but I want to stick with it and the Women’s Board scholarship is allowing me to do so,” said Randby.

“The Women’s Board Scholarship Committee received applications from talented and deserving young women from all across the country, so I am thrilled to congratulate Jessica on her accomplishments and dedication to pursuing a career in the automotive industry,” said Katie Noga, WB president.

The comprehensive Women’s Board scholarship program awards scholarships not only to post-secondary students, but also to female high school students who plan on entering the automotive field upon graduation. This year, a $1,000 high school scholarship was awarded to Jennifer Fleming of Longmont, Colo.; Chanel Abinader of Jamaica, N.Y.; and Alyssa Schweda of Phoenix, Ariz.won the $1,000 technician scholarships.

Car Care Council Women's Board Members Receive AAP

The Car Care Council Women's Board (WB) would like to congratulate members Amy Antenora, Babcox Publications and Susan Ulrey, Tenneco, Inc. for receiving their Automotive Aftermarket Professional (AAP) certifications.

The professional certifications, earned through years of study, participation in industry events and a variety of leadership activities, were conferred by Brian Cruickshank, AAP, director of the University of the Aftermarket, and Robert Gracey, MAAP, president of the University of the Aftermarket Alumni Association.

"Presenting these certificates is one of the best parts of my job," Cruickshank said. "This year's graduates include not only some of the biggest names in the aftermarket, but also several next-generation leaders who are committed to the continued growth of our industry."

The University of the Aftermarket offers the AAP and MAAP certification programs to recognize long-term commitment to the aftermarket and professional development through programs and courses offered by the university and its industry association partners. Developed in partnership by AAIA, the Automotive Warehouse Distributors Association, MEMA and Northwood University, these programs highlight both the educational and professional achievements of each recipient and, by extension, demonstrate the resulting competitive advantage for their employers and the aftermarket industry.

For more information on the university's professional certification programs, visit www.universityoftheaftermarket.com or call 800-551-2882.
